When God Speaks

Have you ever read something that stopped you in your tracks? I did. Last week as I continued my reading in Leviticus, these words caught me. I had to read the verses over, meditate on them and ask God for wisdom.

The LORD was speaking to Moses, giving him instructions to pass onto the Israelites. Let me write these verses, with God's Word in bold script and my thoughts italicized, in hopes that you will follow my heart.

Leviticus 20:1-5)

The LORD said to Moses, “Say to the people of Israel, any man of the people of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn in Israel, who gives any of his children to Molech (an ancient god to whom the people offered child sacrifice. In today’s world, could this be abortion, Lord?)

shall be put to death; the people of the land shall stone him with stones. (God, you are serious!
This must grieve you deeply!)

I myself will set my face against that man, and will cut him off from among his people, because he has given one of his children to Molech, defiling my sanctuary and profaning my holy name. (Oh! how you defend these little ones, God!)

And if the people of the land do at all hide their eyes from that man, when he gives one of his children to Molech, and do not put him to death, (Lord, have my eyes been hiding the fact that over 63 million babies have died at the hands of abortion? Have I blatantly ignored these statistics as if each one hasn’t broken your heart? How have 50 years gone by since this egregious law was passed? Why didn't I see the numbers climbing-when did 1 turn to 100 to 1000 to 63 million? How has my heart not broken over the death of the most innocent? Lord, when did this become common place?)

then I will set my face against that man and against his family, and will cut them off from among their people, him and all who follow him in playing the harlot after Molech. (Lord God, I repent of my ignorance, of my lack of compassion for these tiny ones, please put a stop to this atrocity. Thank you that you will fight for these babies. Thank you that you know each one. Likely, you even know their names!)

I was in high school when Roe vs Wade was passed. No one could have imagined that over 63 million babies would be killed by abortion in the 50 years that followed. This happened on my watch. And I closed my eyes.

The story of Cain and Abel comes to my mind. Cain killed his brother Abel. Genesis 4:10 tells us that the LORD questioned Cain about his brother’s whereabouts. To which Cain replied; “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”

The LORD responded; “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to Me from the ground.”

And I wonder . . . what do the cries of 63,459,781* babies sound like as it reaches to our God in heaven?

Dear Lord, your statutes are good. You shine in righteousness. Please forgive us for closing our hearts and eyes to these lives. We pray healing for all who have accepted the lie. Heal the hearts of those broken by these choices. Show us how we can stand for truth. Lead us, we pray.

Thank you for being our defender! We pray that righteousness will cover America again. In your precious name, Jesus, we pray. Amen.
